Department functions and Production

One of the main aims and objectives of LTWA when it was founded in 1972 was to compile, translate, print and publish books and manuscripts on all aspects of Tibetan culture, history, literature, philosophy, traditional science etc. under the LTWA logo. In fulfillment of this objective, the English Publication Department started to function in 1973. Since its inception, the department has been actively engaged in publication activities concerning Buddhist philosophy and other aspects of Tibetan culture.

This department functions as a publishing house and engages itself in all the processes involved in the production of a book -- from data entry, making the layout, formatting, cover designing and finally producing a final copy for the printing press.

So far this department has published 567 titles including the journals. BOOKS:

English Language: 151 titles with main subjects on Buddhist philosophy, archaeology, history, politics, medicine, language and folk culture and others related with Tibetan culture.
Tibetan Language: 227 titles with main subjects on Buddhist philosophy, collected works of eminent Tibetan masters, scholars, saints; biographies, epic stories, archaeology, history, politics, medicine, language and folk culture and others related with Tibetan culture. These are printed in book format and traditional Tibetan Pecha format.
Hindi Language: 6 titles on Buddhism and literature.
JOURNALS:

  1. Tibet Journal: This International quarterly journal is published in English. To date 143 issues (upto Vol XXIV No 1) have been published.
  2. Tam Tsog: This bi-annual journal is published in Tibetan and to date 32 issues have been published.
  3. Science Journal: This journal is published in Tibetan and to date 13 issues have been published. 4.Botvani: This journal is publisHed in Hindi and to date 1 issue has been published.

Many of these publications have been translated into various foreign languages such as Spanish, German, French, Portuguese, Italian, Russian, Hungarian, Finnish, Japanese, Korean and Chinese language. To date, more than 78 titles have been published in these languages. This department also deals with the copyright administration, preparation of Agreements and Contracts between authors and publishers, provision of ISBN numbers, etc. Publications are distributed worldwide by our Delhi-based distributor M/s Paljor Publications (website www.paljorpublications.com). They are also available at the library’s sales counter located within the LTWA building.

Library

The primary objectives of the LTWA are to provide a comprehensive cultural resource centre and to promote an environment that encourages research and an exchange of knowledge between scholars and students. These factors are of the utmost importance in a contemporary world shaped by political and spiritual confusion. In trying to fulfill its objectives, the Library's priorities include:

  • Acquiring and conserving Tibetan manuscripts, books, artifacts and works of art.
  • Providing access to books, manuscripts and reference works (in Tibetan as well as in foreign languages) in study areas within the Library.
  • Compiling bibliographies and documentation of Library holdings and related literature available worldwide.
  • Providing copies and prints of Library holdings and acting as a reference centre for such source materials.
  • Publishing books and manuscripts under the Library imprint.
  • Supporting research and study of the Tibetan language, both classical and modern.

Tibetan Books & Manuscripts Library

The Tibetan book and manuscript collection holds more than 100,000 titles in the form of manuscripts, books, xylographs, documents and illuminated scriptures. The collections include centuries old manuscripts, documents and contemporary publications. Parts of the collection are open to the public, while access to others is restricted to accredited scholars and researchers. Study areas are provided in the respective wings housing each collection. Research guidance is available from resident scholars. General information about the libraries is available at the reception desk.

New titles are added each year ranging from rare and original manuscripts to contemporary reprints in book form including those donated by His Holiness the Dalai Lama. The entire collection is also being catalogued in a computer database in the Tibetan language, which will be available to the public. This makes it the only collection of its kind catalogued by computer in Tibetan. Library users can gain access to any part of the collections through the online cataloguing system
